Singapore Food 101: No visit is complete without eating the chili crab and black pepper crab. If you leave without trying these dishes, don't tell anyone - your mistake will be the subject of ridicule for years. While you can get your fix at popular places such as Jumbo, Long Beach, Tung Lok, and No Signboard, we suggest Trabblrs go to Mellben for a big bang for your buck, delicious eating experience.
Not only do they serve mean versions of the Singapore staples, but they also create the signature Laksa Claypot Crab Bee Hoon soup where the sweet crustaceans swim alongside noodles in a spicy, coconut milky broth. Other awesome dishes are Butter Crab, Wasabi Prawns, and the Chilled Sweet and Sour Pork. Don't forget to polish your plate clean with some mantou.
A meal at Mellben is a great way for Trabblrs in Singapore to catch up and share travel stories and tips on the city. Be prepared to wait though - while a little more off-the-grid than other seafood restaurants, Mellben has a huge, borderline-cult, following.
Meeting point: At Ang Mo Kio MRT station Exit C. From here, we suggest Trabblrs go to the bus interchange together and then take bus 132, 165, 166, or 169 to Mayflower Secondary School. The restaurant is opposite the school.
Leaders, the restaurant is only open from 4:30pm to 11:30pm so please plan your event accordingly! Get there as early as possible to avoid waiting in a queue (Mellben doesn't take reservations)!
