Get off the city's beaten path and join trendy locals with a creative bent at the monthly Mercado de Motores in the Museo del Ferrocarril de Madrid (The Madrid Railway Museum)! Held on the first weekend of every month, the museum comes alive with independent craftsmen, artists, and designers commingling with old locomotives and railroad cars to sell everything from vintage clothes to handmade shoes and mosaic tiles to bow ties. You will definitely find original souvenirs here for your friends back home.
In addition to the actual market, Trabblrs can ride a miniature steam train, listen to live music, eat fresh and organic food, and wash everything down with cold cocktails. If you're luckily in town when the market is on, then meet up with other Trabblrs and experience what madrilenos do when the tourists are out walking around Plaza Mayor!
If you're not in Madrid on the first weekend of the month then you can still visit the museum, which is still very much worth a visit. Located in the 19th century former Delicias station, the museum is a beautiful example of Spanish industrial architecture.
Meeting point: Outside the main entrance to the museum. The closest Metro stop is Delicias on the Yellow / 3 Line.
Leaders, the market is held on the first weekend of each month, so please plan accordingly. It's open from 11am to 10pm on both Saturday and Sunday. For the museum's hours outside the market times, click here.
