For People visiting Geneve for the first time I would recommend the lake as a good starting point. There are many options near the Lake. One can go for a walk or head to the Jet d'eau and get a motor boat. There are grass patches by the lake where one can lay down and relax. There are plenty of small restaurants and ice cream shops by the lake as well. . One can stop there and enjoy the view. It is hypnotic on a clear day. From the Lake I would head directly towards rive and check out the shopping options. I would then consider going to the old town and checking out some the nice restaurants and bars over there. Spend the night in the old town or head to some of the clubs in the city. The next day i recommend checking out the U.N building and the cathedral which would take a few hours. . I would then goto the Botanical Garden next to the United nations take a walk and relax on the lake with some music. To end the Trip I would go to Trattoria at Rue De servette and eat a penne a la siciliana.
What kind of practical information should first-time visitors know about Geneva?
It is a really expensive place , so plan well. Try and stay as close to the station as possible. Coop and Migros are the two supermarket Chains over there , so if you see one wherever you are staying a quick shopping trip is recommended. One can buy a day ticket , the ticket is valid in trains , trams buses and even the local public ferry's. Public Transport is excellent so getting around is not a problem till 1 am. After 1 there are no buses, Geneve is french speaking and knowledge of the language is definitely helpful. Best to go there during summer . Winter can be boring.
What are some precautions that people should take while exploring Geneva?
It is a really clean place and generally very safe , Avoid the cornavain and paquis area during the night. If you are coming back from bain des paquis come from rue de mont blanc . There are dealers and junkies near the cornvain . They are mostly harmless but best avoided. Stay away from rue de Zurich , Rue De Paquis Rue De fribourg and Rue de berne during late hours of the night , i am talking post 2 am, if you are alone. If you are in a group its fine.
