I travelled to Jaisalmer with my family as part of a week long trip of Jaipur - Jodhpur - Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, India. Filmmaker Satyajit Ray's movie - Sonar Kella was based here and as an ardent fan and having grown up watching it, I just had to visit the Golden Fortress, the major attraction in Jaisalmer. Starting from Jaipur, it takes around 6-8 hours by train to travel between each of the cities. Prior Hotel and Cab arrangements is always recommended.
This is where you get a real taste of the Great Thar desert. The camel safaris on the sand dunes and the campfires with folk dances and music are not to be missed.
Legend has it that the 84 villages of Kuldhara, which were inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins were abandoned by them overnight. These villages are supposed to be cursed and uninhabitable since then. Quite a mystery there!
Built from yellow sandstone, like most of the buildings in Jaisalmer, this inhabited fort stands at the heart of the city and is one of the most breathtaking monuments I have ever seen.
Admire the magnificent architecture of the Jain temples near Jaisalmer.
This architectural marvel of the bygone era, which used to be the mansion of brocade merchants stirs your imagination.
Lovely place to enjoy some boat ride and bird watching...
